Dean Jernigan

Dean Jernigan has more than 30 years of experience in the self storage industry. After retiring from the role of CEO of CubeSmart (NYSE:CUBE) in 2013, he founded Jernigan Capital as the only direct lender focused exclusively on the self storage industry. His experience in the self storage industry spans more than 30 years.

He began his tenure in the industry in 1984 when he founded Storage USA, a company he took public in 1994. He grew Storage USA from a single property to more than 570 properties at its peak. During its life as a public company and under his leadership as Chairman and CEO, the company returned a 17.5% compounded annual return to its investors. Following the sale of the company to GE Capital, he formed Jernigan Property Group which assembled a portfolio of 17 properties in a short 18 months seizing upon the opportunity of a short acquisition cycle that presented itself.

In 2006, Jernigan accepted the challenge of rebuilding and rebranding U-Store-It which became CubeSmart. During his tenure as CEO, the company’s market capitalization more than doubled from approximately $2B to more than $4B. With extensive experience and knowledge in more than 100 US markets as a developer, owner and manager of self storage facilities, Dean has earned his reputation as an industry innovator, leader and icon.

John A. Good

John Good has over 28 years working with senior management teams and boards of directors of public companies in the REIT and financial services industries on corporate finance, corporate governance, merger and acquisition, tax, executive compensation, joint venture and strategic planning projects. As a nationally recognized corporate and securities lawyer, he was lead counsel on over 200 securities offerings raising in excess of $25 billion over the past 25 years, with more than 125 of those deals being in the REIT industry.

Good began his association with the REIT industry in 1993 with the initial public offering of RFS Hotel Investors and since then has served as outside general counsel to over 10 NYSE-listed REITs, including CubeSmart, Mid America Apartment Communities, Education Realty Trust, Quadra Realty Trust and AmREIT. He most recently was a partner and co-chair of the REIT practice group of Morrison & Foerster LLP, a global law firm. From 1999 to 2013, Good was a partner, multiple term executive committee member and head of the REIT practice at Bass, Berry & Sims PLC and prior to that was a shareholder and chair of the securities and M&A practice groups at Baker Donelson.

Good graduated from the University of Memphis with a BBA in accounting, cum laude, in 1980, attained his CPA designation and practiced with a large regional CPA firm until entering University of Memphis School of Law, where he received his J.D with honors in 1987. He has been nationally ranked by Chambers USA as a leading lawyer to the REIT industry and has been active in NAREIT since 1994.

Jonathan Perry

Jonathan Perry has over 20 years of experience in the self-storage industry. Prior to joining Jernigan Capital, Perry served as Chief Investment Officer of CubeSmart (NYSE: CUBE), where he was responsible for executing the company’s external growth initiatives – acquisitions, development, joint ventures and third-party management. During his tenure, Perry led over $3.5 billion of storage investments.

Jonathan began his career at Storage USA (NYSE: SUS) in 1998, serving in a variety of finance and real estate related roles beyond the company’s sale to GE Capital Real Estate. In 2004, he partnered with Mr. Jernigan to form Jernigan Property Group, LLC; LLC; a Memphis based company that acquired, operated and disposed of self-storage facilities across the United States.

Perry earned his BBA from the University of Memphis and in 1998 attained his MBA in finance with a concentration in real estate.

Kelly Luttrell

Kelly has over a decade of experience in working with publicly-traded companies and the real estate industry. She began and spent the majority of her career at Ernst & Young LLP where she was part of the audit practice for 11 years and served numerous publicly-traded clients ranging from emerging growth companies to Fortune 500 companies, and had significant exposure to REIT financial reporting and accounting issues. Kelly joined the Company in the fall of 2015 from MicroPort Orthopedics, Inc., a global medical device manufacturer, where she served as Controller and Finance Director. A certified public accountant, she has a master of accountancy and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Baylor University.

David Corak

David Corak

David Corak has six years of experience as a sell-side research analyst covering the REIT sector. Most recently, Corak was a senior analyst at B. Riley FBR, Inc. where he covered the self-storage, student housing, single family and net lease REIT sectors. Prior to that, Corak was a senior associate at Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, where he also covered the self-storage sector. David started his career at PNC Financial as a banking analyst. He obtained a bachelor’s of science with a double major in Finance and Accounting from Georgetown University and is a CFA® charterholder. David is a Baltimore, MD native and lives in Baltimore County.

William Q. Perry

William Q. Perry

Billy Perry has over 30 years of experience in various aspects of the real estate industry. He began his career as a licensed securities broker selling real estate limited partnerships in the mid 1980’s. He has worked for various banks in residential and commercial mortgage lending and served as SVP of real estate lending with the Kemmons Wilson banks. He is both a licensed real estate affiliate broker and general contractor who has built numerous properties with the Kemmons Wilson Companies and for 12 years served as President of a local building company constructing over 800+ homes and developing in excess of 1,500 lots. Billy joined Jernigan Capital as a Business Development Director in August 2015.

Perry graduated from the University of Memphis with a BBA in finance and in 1986 attained his MBA in finance and economics. He has served on the boards of the Memphis Area Homebuilder’s Association, local United Cerebral Palsy and as Chairman of the Briarcrest Christian School Board of Trustees.

Mark O. Decker

Mark O. Decker has been a member of our board of directors since March 2015. Mr. Decker is currently the vice chair of BMO Capital Markets, a position he has held since January 2014. Prior to becoming vice chair, Mr. Decker from September 2011 to January 2014 served as BMO’s Head of U.S. Real Estate Investment and Corporate Banking. Before BMO Capital Markets, Mr. Decker was a managing director and co-group head of the real estate investment banking group at Morgan Keegan from February 2011 to September 2011. Prior to his time at Morgan Keegan, from May 2004 to February 2011 he was a managing director and head of the real estate group at Robert W. Baird & Co. Incorporated. Before joining Baird, Mr. Decker founded the real estate investment banking group at Ferris, Baker, Watts, Inc. in 2000. Mr. Decker began his investment banking career in 1997 when he joined Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co. as a managing director. He served as president and principal spokesman of the REIT industry and its national trade association, National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (“NAREIT”) from 1985 to 1997. Concurrently, he served as chief executive officer of the Pension Real Estate Association from 1985 to 1990. Before his career in real estate capital markets and investment banking, Mr. Decker served in the White House during the Nixon and Ford administrations. He is the 1997 recipient of the NAREIT REIT Leadership Award. Mr. Decker holds a J.D. from George Mason University School of Law and a B.S. in Education from Kent State University. We believe Mr. Decker’s expertise in the REIT industry, financial acumen and investment banking background are a significant value to our board of directors.

James Dondero

James Dondero has been a member of our board since August 2016. Mr. Dondero is Co-founder and President of Highland Capital Management (HCM). Mr. Dondero has over 30 years of experience in the credit and equity markets, focused largely on high-yield and distressed investing. Under Mr. Dondero’s leadership, Highland Capital has been a pioneer in both developing the Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLO) market and advancing credit-oriented solutions for institutional and retail investors worldwide. HCM’s product offerings include institutional separate accounts, CLOs, hedge funds, private equity funds, mutual funds, REITs, and ETFs. Mr. Dondero is Chairman of NexBank, Cornerstone Healthcare, and CCS Medical, and serves as a board member of MGM Studios. A dedicated philanthropist, Mr. Dondero actively supports initiatives in education, veterans’ affairs, and public policy. Prior to founding HCM in 1993, Mr. Dondero was involved in creating the GIC subsidiary of Protective Life, where as Chief Investment Officer he helped take the company from inception to over $2B between 1989 and 1993. Between 1985 and 1989, Mr. Dondero was a Corporate Bond Analyst and then Portfolio Manager at American Express. Mr. Dondero began his career in 1984 as an analyst in the Morgan Guaranty training program. Mr. Dondero graduated from the University of Virginia where he earned highest honors (Beta Gamma Sigma, Beta Alpha Psi) from the McIntire School of Commerce with dual majors in Accounting and Finance. He has received certification as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Howard A. Silver

Howard A. Silver has been a member of our board of directors since February 2015. Mr. Silver retired in 2007 as the chief executive officer and president of Equity Inns, a position he held since 1998. Equity Inns is a former New York Stock Exchange listed company and hotel real estate investment trust focused on the upscale, extended-stay, all suite and midscale limited-service segments of the hotel industry, until its sale to Whitehall Global Real Estate Funds in October 2007. Mr. Silver also served as the executive vice-president of finance, chief financial officer and chief operating officer of Equity Inns from 1994 to 2004. Prior to his tenure at Equity Inns, Mr. Silver spent 13 years in the auditing field with both Ernst & Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Mr. Silver currently serves as a member of the board of directors of Education Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE:EDR), a publicly listed collegiate housing REIT, a position he has held since 2012. Since January 2014, he has served as a member of the board of directors of Landmark Apartment Trust of America, Inc., a multifamily real estate company that is a publicly registered, non-traded REIT. From its inception in 2004 through the sale of the company in 2012, Mr. Silver was a member of the board of directors of Great Wolf Resorts, Inc., (NASDAQ:WOLF), a publicly listed family entertainment resort company. He also served as a member of the board of directors of CapLease, Inc., (NYSE:LSE), a publicly listed net lease REIT, from its inception in 2004 through the sale of the company in November 2013. Mr. Silver graduated cum laude from the University of Memphis with a B.B.A. in Accounting and was designated a Certified Public Accountant in 1980. We believe Mr. Silver’s expertise in the REIT industry, financial acumen and accounting background are a significant value to our board of directors.

Harry J. Thie

Harry J. Thie

Harry J. Thie has been a member of our board of directors since February 2015. Dr. Thie currently is a senior management scientist at the RAND Corporation, a position he has held since 1991. From 1987 to 1991, Dr. Thie was the Director in Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army, and served as an active duty officer in the United States Army from 1964 to 1991, retiring as a Colonel in 1991. From 1994 to 2002, Dr. Thie served as a member of the board of directors of Storage USA, where he also held positions as the chair of the compensation committee and a member of the audit committee. Dr. Thie holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from the George Washington University, an M.S. in Industrial Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a B.A. in History from Saint Bonaventure University. We believe Dr. Thie’s expertise in the self-storage REIT industry developed as a member of the board of directors of StorageUSA, his prior experience serving on audit and compensation committees and his leadership abilities derived from his military experience are a significant value to our board of directors. The board of directors has designated Dr. Thie to serve as the lead independent director. In addition to chairing all executive sessions of the independent directors, the lead independent director shall have such other duties as the Board of Directors may determine from time to time.

Rebecca Owen

Rebecca Owen, age 56, currently serves as Senior Vice President of Clark Enterprises, a private investment firm with a diversified investment portfolio ranging from private equity to real estate. Ms. Owen is also President of CEI Realty, Inc., an affiliate of Clark Enterprises that manages the company’s real estate ventures, where she leads the CEI Realty, Inc. team and the real estate portfolio. Ms. Owen has been in senior leadership positions at Clark for over 20 years since joining Clark as General Counsel, and she currently serves on the Real Estate Investment Committee. Ms. Owen currently serves as a member of the Board of Carr Properties (a private REIT), as chair of the Real Estate Investment Advisory Committee of ASB Capital (an institutional real estate investment firm), a member of the Board of Horizons National, a Westport, Connecticut-based nonprofit focused on enhancing the life and learning skills of elementary and secondary school students from low-income families, and as a member of the Board of the Suburban Hospital Foundation and of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Washington, DC. Ms. Owen previously served as a Board member for Columbia Equity Trust (formerly NYSE: COE) and as an Advisory Committee member for multiple private equity funds. Ms. Owen previously practiced law at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP. She received a JD from The University of Chicago Law School and a BA from Hamilton College.
